via Third Mainland Bridge
The road: up onto Third Mainland
From Yaba the usual way to VI is onto Third Mainland Bridge at Adekunle, over the Lagos Lagoon, then across Lagos Island. When Third Mainland is locked, drivers use Eko Bridge instead; Carter Bridge is shut. On a clear morning it’s about 45 minutes by our rough estimate; one breakdown on the bridge and it’s anyone’s guess.
Yaba is Lagos’s tech district, between Unilag, Yabatech and the offices along Herbert Macaulay Way, and plenty of people here work on the Island. A carpool is one car making that trip instead of three or four.
Pickup points: being set up
Pickup points here are still being set up, at landmarks Yaba already uses, somewhere a car can pull in on the way to the bridge. Likely places include:
- Unilag main gate, Akoka
- Sabo
- E-Centre, Commercial Avenue
- Yabatech, Herbert Macaulay Way
- Alagomeji
- Victoria Island
These aren’t in road order yet: the order will follow the drive to the bridge once the points are set. Not near any of them? Join, choose Other and say where you’d wait.
Morning and evening times
Morning pickups are planned for 6:30 to 7:30 am, which gets you over the bridge before the worst of it. Heading home, cars will leave VI between 5:00 and 7:00 pm. You choose the time you usually leave when you join, and rides will only run between 5:00 am and 10:00 pm.
Every ride will be confirmed ahead: morning rides the evening before, rides home by 4:30 pm on the day. If someone can’t make it, Simbi, Ganusii’s WhatsApp assistant, will offer the seat to someone else on the route or tell everyone who is riding.
